6 Ways Spring Cleaning is Good for You

The idea of spring cleaning originated from the days of fireplace-heated homes. Back then, people would do everything they could to keep the heat inside of the house, and after a long, stuffy winter, Spring was the perfect time to air out the house and all of the soot and grime that accumulated over the winter.

In today's world, we have central heating, we don't spend as much time hibernated inside of our homes during the winter months, and as a result, our homes don't accumulate the same amount of dust, soot, and stale air as years ago.

Even though we may not deal with the same conditions as generations previously, it is still a common tradition to clean our homes in the Spring. We still enjoy the opportunity to let in fresh air, clean windows, freshen linens, and clean difficult-to-reach places. The days are longer, the weather is nicer, and we tend to be more social and have more company starting this time of year.

Since tomorrow is the first official day of Spring, we thought that we would put together a list of the top reasons why Spring cleaning is good for you!

  1. Increased productivity - Organization experts say over and over again that being decluttered and having things in their respective places puts you at ease mentally and allows you to get done more of what you need to in a more acceptable timeframe. This often involved letting go: as you are picking up random objects and looking to find a place for it to live, honestly ask yourself if you still use, or even need it. If not, toss it.
  2. Helps you focus - this ties directly into the previous tip. A dirty, cluttered house often lends itself to stress and anxiety. By having items put away and your house in order, you are able to concentrate on the things that matter the most in life. Remember, you can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs, so don't worry about making more of a temporary mess if you are just starting out. Just relax and take it room-by-room to make sure the job gets done properly.
  3. Make you happy - Studies have shown that a clean home is a happy home. Have a clean home provides a sense of satisfaction, which can put you in a good mood. Looking to really increase the happiness? Put on some great tunes while you're cleaning!
  4. Bright, light-flooded home - There are few things in life that can make the mind, body, and soul happier and healthier than bright, warm sunlight. After spring cleaning, when the grime has been washed from the windows, the dust wiped from the shelves, and the stains lifted, the bright Spring sunlight will make your home feel light, happy, and inviting!
  5. Lost and Found - often times, especially if you have little ones, things seem to just disappear in the house. Remotes, DVDs, earring, reading glasses, almost anything is susceptible to going missing. One of the unsung benefits of Spring cleaning is that you can usually find all of these things (and then clean and put them away!). It's like having your own personal lost-and-found for items that have gone missing for months!
  6. Cleaning hacks! Spring cleaning is a great time to test out some of those cleaning tips that your friends told you about, you overheard talked about at a get-together, or even that you saw on Facebook.(hint, hint, wink, wink - we just posted 7 Spring Cleaning Tips on Facebook.
